CHAPTER 25

At first, it seemed like a critical complication that Jemma had apprehended him. It was clear that she wanted to steal him away for a good old quickie in the junkyard as soon as she saw him, but with some cajoling, he got her to lead him around the place and show him all the different parts of the party. The cajoling came when she was topless and suggestively sucking on her thumb, and he promised her that he wanted to beat the shit out of Seedy Ron first so that he’d be good and angry when they smashed. Then he’d go twice as rough.

Her approval of this plan came with an orgasmic “Yee-haw!” as she grabbed at her bare tits.

Instead of putting her shirt back on, she made Brayson give her his leather vest. “If you want it back, you’ll have to peel it off me.” And then they started on their circuit around the party.

The first thing that they came across was a human effigy made out of pieces of metal and done up in a torn business suit. A few bikers were throwing various pieces of trash at it—glass bottles, old food, clumps of refuse formed like snowball from waste—as one of the pant legs burned bright orange. “Kill ‘em all!” one of the bikers shouted. And Jemma shouted back, “Burn ’em alive! Cook their flesh!” and then made a sizzling sound with her mouth, giving a discomfortingly accurate representation of what Brayson imagined skin did when it burned fresh off the bone.

“Where can a guy find a beer around here?” he said, gruff enough to make sure that Jemma would satisfy his request.

“Feisty! Is a beer gonna calm ya down, Gun?”

He just snarled at her.

She cooed. “Well, I’m not sure if calm’s so good for me, but...” And she dragged him away, in the direction of the massive trash pyre.

There, they found a pyramid of beer cans, and were he not supposed to keep up the tough guy act, Brayson would have shed a tear right then and there. It was as structurally beautiful as it was decadent—a tower of Babylon, built out of the finest drink man ever did devise.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as perfect in my entire life.”

“It’s a treasure, ain’t it?” she asked, and then walked over to retrieve two cans from it. “Wanna shotgun one with me?” It wasn’t even Brayson’s charade that provoked him to consent. Shotgunning beer was a simple pleasure, never to be turned down.

Returning with the beers, Jemma tossed him a small collapsible knife. He looked her in the eyes when he pierced a slit into the aluminum. She inhaled a little, catching a breath that she was just about to lose. He handed it to her and then did the same with the other can.

“Ready?”

She just licked her lips and grinned.

“One,” he said.

“Two,” she followed.

“Three.” And they popped the cans and went to town.

Mid-shotgun, with his head tilted, Brayson saw a band of black bikers and, in their wake, his second lieutenant, Vince Golden.
